Taming the Mind Monster

The Mind Monster.  Now that can be looked at from two different perspectives.  One is the Mind Monster that can overcome whatever comes into its presence.  The other is the Mind Monster that causes you to freeze and not move forward with decisions.

This topic can address so many things.  I am having to focus myself as my Mind Monster wants to cover so many topics about this topic. The goal is to provide a tool that you can use and apply to your real estate plans to come to a decision that is best for you.  Remember this is a tool and not the answer of what is best for you.  You have to decide that.

The tool follows:

  1. Blank piece of paper or computer where you can write down (type) all of your thoughts about selling/buying/renting/financing your current property or the one you are considering acquiring.  This includes emotions such as fear (what if the property doesn’t sell? What price should I sell for?….), joy (property sold in record time), supported (my team was or wasn’t awesome…) and any other thoughts or emotions that come up.
  1. Take each item and write out why you think or feel that way.  This is the brainstorming process that lets you take things out of your head and move to real concrete words.  By the way, you can write whatever you want.  Use any words you like.  This is your paper and no one else needs to see it.  Goal is to get everything out of your head.
  1. Now review each item and write how overcoming each item is an opportunity.  Note, I didn’t say how you have to do each of these items.  Just how they can be an opportunity.  What happened is that the Mind Monster has now gone from being huge to very manageable.  That is because you shined a light on all the imaginary thoughts and now have clarity of what is real.
  1. Now create the team that can help you accomplish this goal.  You are not alone. Many Sellers and Buyers get stuck because they feel they have to know all the answers to move forward.  The reality is that no one completes a real estate transaction by themselves.  There is a title company, appraiser, home inspector, etc.  Of  course one of the top considerations is selecting an agent or consultant who can help in building this team.

These are 4 simple steps but not necessarily easy steps.  Why?  Because your Mind Monster will continue to work on you through the process to slow you down and even try to get you to come to a stand still.  Go back and follow the steps and you will once again, Tame the Mind Monster.
